Emissions calculations with DACHSER Air & Sea Logistics

For several years now, DACHSER Air & Sea Logistics has been compiling so-called carbon footprints (calculation of the CO₂ balance sheet) of freight transports and summarizing the individual transport-related calculations in emissions reports. The preparation of these reports is a value-added service offered to DACHSER Air & Sea Logistics customers worldwide and is tailored to the individual needs of the customer. In general, primary energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and various air pollutants can be calculated at consignment level. This can also be broken down to individual transport sections. In this way, transport-related carbon footprints can be calculated for complete transport chains, including the pre-carriage, main carriage and onward carriage.

DACHSER uses an emissions calculator for the calculations, which meets all the requirements of the European standard for calculating greenhouse gas emissions from passenger and goods transport (EN 16258). Another advantage of the emissions calculator is that the calculation processes are automated via an XML interface to our Othello transport management system. This allows the emission reports to be generated completely automatically.

In general, the emission calculation in the first step serves to determine the primary energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants emitted by transports. However, this information is essential for deriving necessary measures to reduce emissions. Therefore, in addition to the pure calculations, it is also important to be able to provide our customers with further bases for decisions on emission reduction. For this reason, customers receive simulated calculations of alternative means of transport and bundling strategies on request.

In addition to a comparison of the classic means of transport by air and sea, the alternative of rail transport (see DACHSER Rail Services) is also highlighted for customers.

Statement on the current situation in regard to the spread of the COVID-19 virus

With this announcement, DACHSER is providing information on action to be taken to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus (also known as the coronavirus) within the DACHSER organization and in regard to the current status of operational activities as well as any possible impacts on our customers’ shipments.

In view of the current situation, specific guidelines for conduct and precautions have been rolled out within the global DACHSER organization. The actions to be taken include the establishment of a central reporting management system, regular assessment of the situation, and definition of additional action according to the situation. The relevant activities were also expanded and intensified on the basis of the existing hygiene management in the various areas (human resources, operational, and process hygiene).

In addition to these actions taken internally, DACHSER is complying with all current official regulations and taking appropriate precautions. In the event of restrictions applicable to individual locations, action plans are ready to be implemented in order to ensure that our network can continue to operate.

To enable a smooth process, we depend on being able to work together with all parties involved in the supply chains, including cooperation with truck drivers so that they will also be able to comply with increased hygiene regulations. We also fully integrated the drivers into our hygiene management and provided hand disinfectants at all locations.

We are doing everything possible to maintain our customers’ supply chains and prevent delays in shipments. If supply chains are to be affected in any way by checks, controls, flight cancellations, or the like, we will work to find alternative ways to ship the goods. We would also like to point out that the delivery times for consignments could be extended. However, the measures we have taken so far make us feel well equipped to deal with the current situation.To make this possible, it is essential that we maintain close coordination with our customers.

Air freight market update | June 2022

DACHSER has extended its charter program on the route between Shanghai and Frankfurt. A clear signal of reliability and stability in times of continuing challenges on the global trade markets.

  • Current Situation

Demand for air cargo softened in March and April due to ongoing supply chain disruptions and global inflation. China’s zero-covid strategy with massive lockdowns in Shanghai and other Chinese cities, as well as  the continuing conflict between Ukraine and Russia led to limited flight capacities, supply bottlenecks, and a rapid increase in fuel and energy prices. In 2022, jet fuel prices increased by more than 70%.
 
It is a challenging operating environment for all businesses. But with the easing of restrictions in China on June 1, it will now become even more difficult. It is expected that demand for cargo capacity will increase in the coming months.
 
Therefore, DACHSER Air & Sea Logistics has already extended its charter program on the route between Shanghai and Frankfurt to cover the period from May 2022 to April 2024. Thus, DACHSER is able to continue offering its customers reliable transport capacities. Two days a week, DACHSER flies between Asia and Europe with a wide-bodied aircraft, transporting 33 tons each way.

With this premium service, DACHSER can respond to market capacity changes at short notice and ensure its own stable air freight network.
 

  • China

On Wednesday, June 1, 2022, Shanghai lifted the restrictions on COVID-19 after a two-month lockdown. However, the city is still far away from normal:
 
·         Residents from COVID-19 low-risk areas are free to move within the city.

·         Resumption of public transport.

·         A number of businesses and retailers are still closed and will gradually reopen.

·         Factories and production sites located in COVID-19 low-risk areas are gradually resuming 
          to normal over the next few weeks.

·         Transport logistics services are also resuming to their normal capacity step by step 
          as the restrictions on roads, workers, and drivers are lifted.
 
During the lockdown period, DACHSER’s consolidation warehouse at Shanghai PVG Airport Cargo City was closed. As of June 1, 2022, the warehouse is operating again and the transitional warehouse outside of the Cargo City has been decommissioned again.

The weekly network capacities from Asia (Hong Kong & Shanghai) to Europe and between Europe and the USA (rotation) are an integral part of DACHSER's air freight portfolio. If necessary, additional capacities are booked at short notice.
